A NEW INCLUSIVE MATERNITY WARD AT KYIV MATERNITY HOSPITAL NO. 2

In November 2024, the Way of Hearts Foundation joined the implementation of Ukraine’s first inclusive maternity ward project. By the end of December, several rooms were already readyto welcome future mothers, and recently the department became fully operational.

The inclusive family delivery rooms are designed as mini-apartments. Each room includes a small equipped kitchen and a space for guests supporting the new mother. The entire environment hasbeen thoughtfully designed and equipped to meet the needs of people with disabilities and reduced mobility:

  • Wide doorways and step-free access to ensure easy wheelchair movement;
  • Additional space around the bed;
  • Accessible bathrooms with support rails and emergency call buttons;
  • Tactile tiles and Braille signage for people with visual impairments.

How the foundation helped

This barrier-free space is the result of joint efforts between local authorities and civil society organisations.

Thanks to the generosity of its members and partners, Way of Hearts Foundation financed the major renovation of the new department, including replacement of flooring and ceilings, installationof air conditioning systems, and essential fittings such as doors, railings, and sanitary equipment.

Why this matters

Amid the ongoing war, the issue of birth rates and improving Ukraine’s demographic situation has become even more pressing. Every improvement in the childbirth experience is thereforeinvaluable. The Foundation is proud to contribute to the creation of the country’s first inclusive maternity space.

Now, women with disabilities and their partners have access to a place where childbirth can be a safe, dignified, and comfortable experience.
